Meet Dr. Sheinman

We sat down with Marc Sheinman, D.O., a board-certified gastroenterologist with NorthShore Medical Group, to learn more about his practice.

When to Visit a Gastroenterologist

Top Quotation MarksTypically, even with gut health, a lot of your primary care needs can be met by your primary care provider, such as the typical one to two days of an upset stomach or just not feeling right. A lot of times symptoms like that can be from routine viruses that we encounter just from being at work or being in contact with someone who's ill.

When it starts lingering and for a week or two weeks and you're experiencing some discomfort, cramping, aches, pains or just irregularity in general, that might be a good time to come and talk to a gastroenterologist. Even with routine infections or viruses, our body can clear them but there can be some "aftershock" so to speak. In those situations, we can help you identify what may benefit your GI system during that time.

Why Gastroenterology is so Important

I love the field of internal medicine, which is where I got my start. I decided that GI would be a good fit for me because of the interesting disease processes we get to see. Every person is different, every problem that we face is different, and no two people can be treated the same way.

A big part of what we treat has to do with quality of life. The problems are often times embarrassing or difficult to talk about. I try to remind my patients that, yeah, maybe around the dinner table these aren't the most comfortable topics to talk about, but in this office this is what we do, all day, every day.

This is a safe space to discuss what the issue is to find a solution to make your day-to-day life a little bit better.

How to Achieve Good Gut Health

A good healthy gut is not something that's easy to come by. That's the honest truth—it takes work.

There are a lot of diets out there and it can be challenging to sift through all of the information. A good, balanced diet, lots of good exercise, adequate water intake and if need be sometimes using something called a probiotic are all components of good gut health.

A lot of times, there's a brain-gut barrier. That means good mental health, not being anxious or worried about what's going on day to day, extra stress at work, etc. We all know that this affects the gut.

All of these things combine to form good gut health. Coming in and having a discussion about how you can fit good habits into your day-to-day is one of the things that we can do in this office.
